Overview Dr. Earl Francis Sykes (1902-1977) was a teacher and university administrator from Kansas who served as president of West Chester State College (now West Chester University of Pennsylvania) from 1961-1969. The collection contains administrative material and correspondence related to his duties at West Chester, speeches, course material, and drafts of various writing projects.

Overview The Frances Lorrayne Layman papers contain items related to alumna Frances Lorrayne Layman's student life at West Chester State Teachers College between 1931 and 1935. Overview Francis Harvey Green (1861-1951) was a former graduate of West Chester State Normal School in 1882. He then joined the English faculty and became department head from 1890-1920. This collection includes both personal items and items that accompanied Green in his career at West Chester Normal School and Pennington School. These items consist of speeches, writings, publications, correspondence, personal collections, newspaper articles, etc.

Scope and Contents This collection is divided into six series: Correspondence, Educational Materials, Civil Rights Materials, Religious Materials, Organizational Materials, and Family and Posthumous Materials. Abstract George Morris Philips (1851-1920) served as Principal of West Chester State Normal School (WCSNS) from 1881-1920. After a brief career as a teacher of mathematics, Philips’s tenure as Principal of WCSNS was distinguished by a major expansion of the campus and student body. Abstract Elmer E. Unger (1889-1991) was a physical education instructor in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania areas from 1915-1946.  One of his daughters, Josephine Unger, was a librarian at West Chester State Teachers College.  This collection includes materials Unger used throughout his career, including course guidelines, notes, and various exercises implemented in his curriculum.
